1974 F-700 and F-600 transmission help, please!
Hello all, new to posting on the forum, new member, but long time forum reader here! I need information on the clark transmissions, I think I have read all of the clark threads, and got a lot of good info, but not exactly what I need. To start out, what I have done is taken my 1974 F-700 wrecker, with a dead 361 ft, 4spd new process, and taken a 300 6cyl, and clark 285v out of a 1974 F-600 fire truck, I have installed the engine, so far, but, was intrigued about the ability to change the final gears in the clark to overdrive. I have also swapped the axles, for the budd wheel front and rear end (maybe one day adding 4wd?) the rear is a 2 spd. Anyhow, I wanted to make 4th gear direct drive, and get the 5th to .80 to one, I have found an outlet, for the parts, but, am unsure of the 5th gear, does it press off of the input shaft, or do I have to change input shafts all together? oops, I almost forget, does anyone have the gear teeth counts for 3rd - 5th gears, also I am starting out with a 285V.

You sure you can swap them gears around?

According to all my research, it can be done, I even called a medium duty trans shop, they said it can be done with the right teeth combo, but they want quite a bit to do the swap, not to mention they are 300 miles away. I can handle the mechanical part, even the press requirements, just need the specs, and input info, midwest trucks claims to carry the replacement parts, just have to be able to match it all up prior to ordering.Another trans shop told me that they did the same for a guy a few years ago, but he brought in all his parts.
794x4390 from this forum was doing something similar, a few years ago, and was hoping to get his input, and specs, if he still has them.

I dont know.. you'll probably have to change the counter shaft if you change the 5th gear on the main shaft?
After that you might as well of just bought a OD trans.
With a 300 you might want to start looking for a OD brownie trans.. More gears the better with that little guy..
Love those 300's though.

85e150six4mtod yes thanks for the link it has some of the counts, but the ones i was looking for seem to be elusive, I guess the question would be did the overdrive model have 4th and 5th reversed? seems that is the 5th main gear made onto the input shaft?

Yes I would rather just get an overdrive, but, in 15 years of looking, I have never actually seen one. I have seen a few online, but they were too expensive, and/or too far away. if I have figured correctly, and the latest world american parts list I have is up to date, it should only cost $199.99 to swap the gears out, doing the work myself. The brownie idea, just doesn't seem to be cost effective, as they are @ least $1000, as for the splits, it does have a 2 speed rear end, now, and sorry I had it back wards, the 361 had the 285, and the six was in front of a np 435.
