460 Help/Advice

Hi everyone, I am new to the 460 forum but not to FTE. I am restoring my Father's 77' Ranger which has a 302 in it. I picked up a spare XLT for parts and was lucky enough to find it had a 74' (I think) 460 sleeping under the hood. I think it is a 460 since you can still read the sticker on the side of the valve cover and it has the seven bolts holding it down. The motor is not original to the truck, but it comes complete with AC and power steering brackets. Whoever did it, did a complete swap. The reason I think it is a 74' is that the carb is a 4300 with D4VE on the tag. I read this should be a 74' carb and I have no reason to think it has been changed from the engine. I am going to try to remove the engine to find out for sure this week if the weather permits. My question is this: Are the 74' heads worth using? I will have them completely reworked if they are. I guess I am just unclear as to what you can actually do to them. Any help would be appreciated. And no, I can't get aluminum heads or anything fancy to replace them. It was hard enough to explain to my wife why I needed another truck to make the one I had better. What I can do is find a set of earlier heads that are suppose to be better, but could I just rework the ones I have? Thanks for any help you can give.

You probably have a set of D3's on there. They are a good street head with some port work & maby a set of bigger exhaust valves.
