460 help!

Hello everyone!

I am thinking about buying a 460 engine out of a 1974 Mercury car to install in my 1979 F350 4x4 pickup (to replace a worn out 400M). The engine was rebuilt by a Ford dealership 10 plus years ago. It was ran for approx 10,000 miles and then pulled (they wrecked the car). It has been sitting in (inside)storage since 1990 or so. It is complete, from carb, to pan including all the
brackets, belts, pulleys, hoses, PS pump, alternator, and wires. The AC bracket is there but the pump is not. Under the dust, it is very clean, no oil stains etc etc. There is light surface rust here and there (all the paint is still there and looks good). The motor does have a smog pump I will be removing.

I guess my questions are:

1. What are the draw backs of this motor, as far as it bing out of a car?

2. Can I assume that the heads came with hard seats because of the smog pump? When I remove the pump, what is the best way to plug the holes in the heads where the air is blown in?

3. What kind of rocker arms am I likely to find? Are they what I want? If not can they be replace easily?

4. I have heard that there are differences in the connecting rods of car engines as compaird to truck engines is this so? If so should I change them to truck rods, or will they work O.K.?

5. I plan on replacing the stock 4bbl intake and FOMOCO (read holley) carb with a Edelbrock Preformer 0-3500 RPM intake and Performer carb. Someone told me that a 650 CFM carb would be enough for a 460 as long as you run it 4000 RPM or less. Is that true? I always thought that anything over 400 CID needed the 750 CFM carb.

6. I know I will need new motor mounts, exaust manifolds, and a rear sump oil pan (and oil pickup), will I also need a new oil dipstick tube? Does someone have the Ford part numbers for the oil pan, pickup, and dipstick tube.

7. I will most likely get the L&L motor mounts. Has anyone out there bought any of the other L&L brackets? (the ones that let you use your 351/400 alternator, PS pump, and AC compressor)
How well do they work? Are they worth the money?

Thats all I can think of for now, Thanks to all in advance.

Dan

460 help!

I only can help with the seat question. 74 had hardened seats. Believe 72 was the first year, when the compression dropped to 8.5:1. Also, the car 460's were rear sump oil pans, don't know if that is what your truck needs, or if you need front sump to clear axle.

460 help!

Well, I can help on #5 & #7 - If you don't plan on anything over 4500 rpms, a 600 will do and most likely get a little better fuel mileage, run an Elde. 750 cfm on mine, but may try the 600 cfm from the 400 just to see if it makes a difference. Only have had mine above 4500 a couple of times even though I really didn't need to spin it near that for my use, it just pulls so good below that. I don't think the 750 cfm would be good much past 5500 rpm's anyway.
I like the brackets, everything mounted up very well, all hardware was included with instructions that even I could follow! They have a very nice gold finish on 'em, but the cost was more than I thought it should be-however, as compared to trying to pick thru the boneyards, it was worth it for me. They even recommend what belts to use, but, do take a piece of rope and measure once everything is mounted, I used 2 belts that were 1" smaller, one on the water pump/power steering and the other for the alt., the sizes given would have been ok, but I wanted both the alt. and PS pump a little closer to the block, the A/C belt was what they recomended. One thing I just thought of, when I went with a Powermaster 140 amp alt., I had to take a little off the bracket that the adjuster bolt goes thru, on the alt. side, I think this is due to the coating on the new alt., stock fit just fine. Motor mounts fit nicely and seem to be much more rigid than my stock ones, but, the old ones had some big time miles on them. There are a few other companies that make lifetime warrented mounts also.
