I am a new member and that is because I just got my High School sweetheart back. It is my 1974 Ford, and it is a completly different truck than the one that I sold my dad 6 years ago because I was joining the military. The only thing he did that in my opinion was a mistake is he put a Holly carb on it. When I had it I had the edelbrack and I had that thing figured out. Give you a little info on the truck so you will have a better basis to answer my question. It is a 390 bored to a 396. Heads and intake has been ported and polished and the bottom end has been balanced. It drives great but I can not get the dang carb tuned!!! What size edel brock should I go with. Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Wouldn't you be $$$ ahead of the game just to drop $10 bucks on a holley tech book and teach yourself how to tune your current carb? They do take more fussing with than an ebok but are pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Plus, your motor will run like a raped ape once you get that holley dialed in.
I agree with pro. I still have things to learn about tuning holleys but once you get the idea of how it works you can really tweak them to run perfectly.
If you have the right CFM Holley, I would just tune it. Edelbrock is a great carb, but its not capable of out performing the Holley. IT is a little more street friendly than the Holley. You very well may simply have a bad power valve in your Holley.
ga302p, I thought you were an edelbrock guy. Anyway a 750cfm would be a good choice. I have tried a brand new 1406 and a 670 street avenger. The holley goes faster. The edelbrock was okay but has problems with smashing the pedal from stops. ga302p believes its the step up springs and i swear its the a/f mixture.

So, I should just get a manual on the holley and learn another carb instead of limiting myself to the one. Thanks guys, unless I can't figure out the new carb then I will be cursing you. Just kidding I appreciate all of ya'lls help. This is an outstanding website.

I am an Edelbrock Guy. I prefer Edelbrock to Holley If I am going to buy a new one for street use. In my opinion, you give up 1or 2 hp and pick up a little fuel economy and driveability with the Edelbrock. I Prefer Holley as a race carb. I would not drop the money to pull a perfectly good Holley off and replace it with an Edelbrock on a street engine.
I actually am a Carter AFB man, same carb as Edelbrock 50 bucks cheaper.
650-750 as previously stated. in my opinion i'd take the holley off. and get an edelbrock.i myself had a bad experence with a holley. my '79 f-250 with a 390 almost. burnt up

I can guarantee you it wasent the carbs fault. It was probably the fault of someone who had messed with the carb. You can burn a car up with an Edelbrock too, you just have to work a little harder at it.
