What is my 300?

Have a recently restored 77 F-150 (paint, body, bed and interior) very high mileage on the 300. Made the mistake of loaning it to a guy who couldn't figure out the three on the tree. Tach'd it WAY out (I'm guessing) in 2nd and brought it back 10 minutes later with the engine knocking big time. At the least I'm going to have to go with a crank-kit or possibly more.

My question is, how do I know if it is a 300 or 300HD? I know that the HD had rotaters on the exhaust valves but the head is off a different 300.

Where are the block casting numbers located and how do I decipher it? If it is an HD, then I'll want to be keeping the crankshaft and having it machined if necessary.

The 300 HD was placed in F-500s and larger, and industrial uses like generators, etc...

So the odds of you having one in your 1977 is remote, unless someone swapped it in.

Are you sure you don't have something simple wrong like a stuck lifter or a broken rocker arm?

I have never heard of a HD block designation. Nor have I heard of a hd head. The 300 is a tractor engine, hd by design. The only difference in the models would be if you have a forged crank. To find that out you have to check the stamp.

Make sure you eleminate all possible sources of the knock before replacing bearings.

Thank you all for your prompt responses, I certainly appreciate it. I didn't inspect for a stuck lifter or a broken rocker because I can hear a very loud "screeching" sound in the bottom end. Thanks again to all!

Good luck with the rebuild, I'm a 300 junkie myself. Are you planning on a stock rebuild?. Reason I ask is because there are a couple of easy mods that will gain you some power and torque, and add to the cool factor.

Thanks for the info, some great ideas! Right now, I'm stranded and my main priority is just doing a stock rebuild and having some wheels again. In the future, I am seriously considering at least improving the volumetric efficiency of this beast i.e. making it breath better. Headers and maybe an offy intake. I did have a question though...
That Carter 1bbl. was definitely NOT one of Ford's better ideas. For the time being...I do have a 2 bbl adapter and wondered why a Ford/Autolite stock carb wouldn't work better. The 2bbl that nearly every carburetor 302 came with (the 2150) Seems to me that since it's made to feed 302 cu.in., why wouldn't that work on a 300?

I'm wondering because this truck is just short of 1/2 million miles (286,000 to be exact) and I'm on my 3rd or 4th carb. Those Carter's just don't kit well and aren't very responsive to adjustments. Any comments?

Uh, not to be a *****, but don't you mean 1/4 million?

Go for the 2150. But you won't get the same response from the carb because you're choking a 2v carb into an opening for 1v.

The 2150 works great on the 300, but Like f250 restorer said, it's kind of a waste unless you mount it on an Offy intake. Headers work great on the 300, but they're a PITA. Later model split exhaust mainfolds (from a EFI 300) work great, and allow you to run true dual exhaust (see my gallery for pics of the manifolds), and they're cheaper than headers, although they offer slightly less torque. Comp Cams makes a 260H cam and spring combo for the 300, but you'll have to toss the rotators to run aftermarket springs. No biggie there, I just picked up a set of intake valve spring retainers from the junkyard, and had the machine shop install them on the exhaust valves when they worked the head, worked out perfect, runs great.

My mistake, I did mean 1/2 million, 486,000. Did a registration check and I'm the second owner. Just a typo.
About that carb swap...I understand that I'm choking two into one and thus the question. Just thought a 2150 would work better than the Carter YF. Not worth the linkage hassle? worse mileage?
I just read about the split manifolds from an EFI and that had never occurred to me, great (and economical) idea. I just want this 300 to breath better.
I figured either EFI manifolds or headers and at least I'd get some scavenging happening and that certainly couldn't hurt.
