Coming Soon

Ford hasn't had a compact pickup in its lineup since the previous-gen Ranger was discontinued following the 2011 model year. The current Ranger moved up into the mid-size segment, leaving a gaping hole in the automaker's lineup. Now, however, a new and compact Ford Maverick is on the way for the 2022 model year, and we just so happen to know a few things about it which we can outline here.

Looks Familiar

From the previously leaked photo of the Maverick coming off the Hermosillo Assembly Plant production line, we can see that it will look a lot like Ford's existing pickups - the Ranger, F-150, and Super Duty. But while the exterior styling mimics the Blue Oval's truck family, its underpinnings will be much different.

Different Underneath

We show the Bronco Sport here because the Maverick will ride on the same unibody chassis as that new model and the existing Escape crossover, though its overall length will surpass those vehicles. That also means that it will be available in either front- or all-wheel-drive configuration, but that doesn't mean it won't be capable.

Body Style

Unlike Ford's other pickup offerings, the Maverick is expected to be offered exclusively in a SuperCrew body style, with four doors and quite a bit of passenger space for its size. That also means that bed space will be somewhat limited, but it should prove adequate for the entry-level buyer Ford is targeting with the truck.

Light Duty

That also means the Maverick won't be hauling or towing massive loads, but it will be capable enough for most of its target audience. It's likely that the compact pickup will have a payload capacity of around 1,500 pounds, and it should be able to tow at least 2,000 pounds - enough to pull light trailers and toys like motorcycles and lawn equipment.

Drivetrain

The Maverick will most certainly utilize one of Ford's smaller EcoBoost powerplants under its hood, most likely the 2.0-liter inline-four, which produces 250 horsepower, also available in the Bronco Sport and Escape. The smaller, 181 horsepower 1.3-liter inline-three is also a possibility. Both would be backed up by Ford's 8-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing

Of course, perhaps the biggest consideration for an entry-level, compact pickup is cost. The Maverick will assuredly be priced lower than the Ranger, so we'd wager that it will start out at around $25,000, which would make it an attractive option for those that need the utility a truck provides but don't want to spend a fortune to get one. And if that's the case, we'll be certain to see quite a few Mavericks populating our roads in the coming years.
