Truck

After a long absence from the American market, the Ford Ranger truck returns to the Ford dealer lots with plenty of modern updates.

Engine

The only engine offered is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbo. This EcoBoost cranks 270 horsepower at 5500 rpm, and 310 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. Fuel economy is listed at 21/26 for the 2-wheel drive variation. This particular one had 4x4, so it was rated at 20/24 mpg.

Shifting

The only gearbox available is the new 10-speed automatic, which provides the correct gear for any situation.

Second Row

Rear Bed

The rear bed was only 5 feet long, but with four doors, we still had enough room for lots of camping gear.

Interior

The cabin is nothing fancy, but the controls are very simple and easy to use. Many will appreciate the old fashioned manual emergency brake lever.

Off Roading

Our test Ranger spent a lot of time off the pavement.

Rock Crawl

This off-road driving included rough rock crawling, which the Ranger is capable of doing if the proper options are ordered.

Economy

On highway trips, the fuel economy was 24 mpg cruising at 65 mph. In 750 miles of driving, with most in heavy city traffic, or off-road, we averaged near 18 mpg. This is a decent figure for a 4x4 truck.

FX4

The Ranger is a welcome addition to the small truck market. Ford is going to sell plenty of these.
