I am getting ready to change the fluid in my 5R55W. The manual say it holds 12.X quarts dry fill. Since I am just draining the pan, how many quarts of Mercon V do I need to have ready?
holds about 5 quarts. dont know what model you got, but my 2002 explorer dont have a dip stick. you have to pump the oil back in with a weed sprayer or other pump. the fill and drain plugs are two in one on the bottom.
see if you can get to the fill plug. i didnt have much luck. most garages have a small pump that connects with a hose to the small pipe plug and pumps the oil inside. i just put 5 quarts in a weed sprayer and used a coupld pounds of air pressure. hose fit the plug hole pretty good.
So, if I change the 5 quart pan, I will have changed only 5/12's of the oil capacity (since the transmission holds about 12 quarts). Then if I change it again, after driving it some, I'll have changed another 5/12's.
The % new fluid looks like this after each 5 quart dump.
1st dump: 42% new
2nd dump: 66% new
3rd dump: 80% new
4th dump: 88% new
5th dump: 93% new
After 25 quarts I'll have 93% new fluid because of the 7 quarts or so trapped in the torque converter.
Assuming $3 a quart, I’ll have $75 in oil and still not have it all changed out. Of course, I could stop at the 2nd or 3rd dump I suppose.
Did you guys do multiple dumps or just the first one?
I found that a 1/4 x 2'' Brass nipple threads perfectly into the fill hole in the drain plug. The hose from my hand pump fits nicely over that. under $2.00 at HD
I eneded up going to the dealer last month to have the transmission power flushed. The dealer said he had to flush it twice to get the fluid looking clean. He didn't charge many any extra for the second flush.

Remove fluid from torque converter. To do this---remove rubber plug, this will
give you access to pipe plug in converter.
