Planning to replace my 2013 F250 6.2L with something with 7.3 in it.
I’m researching 22-23 F250/350 for pulling a light weight fifth wheel camper under 9000 and a dump trailer under 10000. I live in Pa and will not be getting it from there Pa is where good vehicles go to die of rust. And even aluminum bodies have steel frames that get eaten away so I have decided to go south to where roads don’t get salted. Any way a lot of southern trucks have 3.55 rears instead of my choice of 3.73 would that gear raito make it a no sale and why. I feel like it might make me run in lower gear. May have been a concern with 3 4 5 6 speed transmission but the 10 speed should be fine. I pulled this fifth wheel with 2 04 f150s a 02 F 350 power stroke and my current 2013 F250 6.2l the 150s just didn’t have the springs for the job but otherwise did well power wise. The 350 drw played with it get it into od and come out when I stopped zf6.
The goes 5-6 trips a year usually less that 2 hour travel the dump trailer is used for firewood and coal pluse stone for driveway all are short trips with no killer hills in the loaded directions.
I like to research things to death but it is the way things are with me. Everything has its faults but I like to know what to look out for. Looking at the used market there are a lot of 7.3l getting close to or over 200k on them so they seem to last.
Yeah that shouldnt be an issue. It seems like you just need a basic xl regular cab truck and I dont think you can get that engine in the 23-26 model unless you go up in trim.
But as of 27 you can order a new one like that. So it would be a 20-22 or 2027. As mentioned 20-22 f250 could come with the 3.55.
I would honestly order a new one if funds allowed. Longbed super cab F250 4.30 should have the heavy duty leaf pack and save a few bucks.
2020-2022 7.3 F-250s only came with 3.55s (Standard) or 4.30s, some had lifter issues and some 2020-early 2022 had transmission issues.
2023+ 7.3 F-250s only came with 3.73s (Standard) or 4.30s and a smaller front axle. But seem to have less problems.
The 2023+ are a slightly different and uglier animal in IMO.
The 2023 look had to grow on me but it finally did. The 23+ 7.3 has trucks don't have the issues from before and the 10 speeds are more robust with the fix for the CDF drum and one other issue installed from the factory.
Part of the problem was that Ford decided to lower the oil pressure at the worst possible time: at idle. They did this for EPA related reasons and it cost them and customers an engine. In late 2024, they came out with a flash that increased oil pressure at idle and throughout the RPMs so it eliminated the ticking and valvetrain issues they had.
