In the 2 1/2 years and 21,000 miles I have put on my 55 I have had a Ford 1G, Ford 2G, Tuff Stuff, and my present Ford 3G.
The 1G regulator full fielded and I wanted to upgrade anyway so I put in a Tuff stuff which went to 17 volts after a while, replaced the regulator and same story, 17 volts after a while.
I then put in a 2G that I had and it worked for a while and voltage just kept dropping, then I put on a rebuilt 3G and it worked fine for a while but last Saturday I looked and it was under 12 volts so I was looking for a decent place to
swap in my spare which I now always carry and it just started working again.
I do have a #12 ground wire connected to the alternator case and running to a common grounding point that is connected directly to the neg battery cable
The problem does appear to be heat related, the alternator does sit right behind one of my electric fans,
Is it just to hot there? I have been looking at the possibility of removing the regulator from the alternator and putting it somewhere cooler
How's the battery and related wiring? Also check the belt adjustment & condition. I always stay away from the rebuilt stuff if possible....maybe replace the G3 with a new one? Why do you think it's heat related issue? I recently just did a G3 alternator upgrade with CVF racing brackets and added a electric fan, so far so good.
all of the battery cables, wiring and battery are 3 years old
the belt is good and not slipping, if the belt is loose it squalls really loud
the reason that I think it is heat related is the voltage always drops when its hot, on one long road trip when it was hot the voltage dropped to a concerning level and I was watching it closely, then the sun went down and cooled off and the voltage
came back up. @55F250 a ford 3G uses a internal fan instead of external
Ya, that regulator might be the problem or the diodes. How bad was the voltage drop? Either way it looks like a failing part in that rebuilt G3. Junk it and get a new one with a lifetime warranty.
If I start the truck up, torn the AC on and let it run for 10 minutes the alternator will stop working, I poured some water on it and it
went back to working
What is the draw from those radiator fans? Are they staged, or do both come on at once? What is the rating on your alternator(s)? Some fans are notoriously high amperage.
