I have a 96 F150, 5.8 MAF truck. I pulled the engine out recently to reseal it and noticed I have no air pump or thermactor system. The truck came factory this way, as nothing has been "deleted". I do have cats and O2 sensors. Is this typical for this year? I remember my Bronco having a thermactor system, with ports into the rear of the heads, tubing to the cats and an air pump. There is a factory pulley where the air pump would normally be. Everything runs great, just peaked my curiosity and made the engine out/install much easier.
That's normal for a half ton 5.8L in 1996. OBD-II and EEC-V. No TAB/TAD, no AIR pump. You'll have: DPFE based EGR system instead of valve position sensing. Misfire sensor off the harmonic balancer tone ring. Post-catalyst oxygen sensor. Can't recall if there's anything else.

Interesting! I appreciate the info. It was nice not having to remove extra stuff. And yes, I have a tone ring on the balancer and a post cat O2 like you mentioned.
You're welcome. Keep in mind some of those parts are 1 year only: harmonic balancer w/ tone ring and EGR tube are the two I've had limited success finding replacements for. I think the rest of the 1996 5.8L parts are generic enough between 302 & 351W they're easy to find.
I beg to differ
How's the weather in Laramie GoinBoardin?
That engine would have had an air pump on it
The aftermarket pulley and bracket for a smog pump delete give it away
There was once a thermactor where that aftermarket bracket is
The VECI is blurry to read zoomed in, but at the bottom of that Vehicle Emissions Control Information sticker (VECI)
it will say what that truck should have had like TWC etc

I'm the second owner of the truck, the first owner was the municipality I work for, they did not remove any smog equipment. The bracket & pulley is factory where the air pump normally would be. Also, I replaced the ecm with a rebuilt unit from O'Reilly's a couple years ago, matching the calibration codes and the new ecm does not display any codes like smog equipment is missing. I got to reading further after my post, and it appears the 5.8 in the light duty trucks for 1996 did not come with an air pump system and related parts. The 4.9, 5.0 & 7.5 did though. I learn something new everyday!

Yes, typical as it is a 1996 F150/Bronco OBDII MAF, SFI, no air pump and no air plumbing.
Yes from the factory.
Yes, 1996 F150/Bronco 1 year only.
1997 F150 body style changed, so did the drive train.
1997 F250/F350 351w same MAF/OBDII as what you have.

The image is proof that it did not come with AIR pump and related plumbing.
The idler bracket and pulley is a stock ford part, No Longer Available(NLA) in stock form, yes available as after market.
Engine: 5.8L
Evaporative Emissions Family: TFM1045AYMBB
Exhaust Engine Family: TFM5.858GFEK
TWC(2): Three Way Converter means your vehicle has two(2) three-way catalytic converts in the exhaust.
2HO2S: Two Heated Oxygen Sensors
EGR: Exhuast Gas Recircultation
SFI: Sequential Fuel Injection
Yes these are interesting setups, and a little different from all the other OBS trucks discussed in this forum.
There will be 3 HEGO's in total. A HEGO for each bank, plus another post catalyst to check catalyst efficiency.
Correct, factory idler bracket and pulley on these setups, no AIR system from Ford.
As for the F-250 & F-350 in 1996+ with 5.8L, I am pretty sure only California spec trucks had this EEC-V with OBD-II and these unique parts. Most of the 5.8L HD trucks retained EEC-IV and OBD-I with SD. Could be wrong here.
Weather in Laramie has been delightful. Now that its May, we've finally had March weather with some snow and making a dent in the drought. Local mountains and some towns north of us just got slammed, couple feet up high.
Edit: oh another difference, Ford spec'd platinum plugs on these trucks. I think that was to keep them from needing plugs replaced inside the 80,000 mile emissions system warranty of 1996, but that's a guess. They run fine on copper core anyway.

Great info! This one off year can make some parts near impossible to find, but I do like having a MAF system.
