My first experience with death wobble 2014 f350

First time I have ever experienced death wobble in any vehicle I owned, I was driving doing about 75mph hit a bump on the highway and had death wobble, wouldn't stop until I pulled over on the highway.

Got to the shop and checked the front end, I found the drag link was worn out, replaced it and did an alignment problem got 90% better. When I hit a bump on the highway theres no more death wobble, but there is a shake that resinates thru out the steering wheel.

Tires are wearing perfectly straight, tires pressures are set correctly, and the alignment is spot on.

I also replaced the steering stabilizer as well. I was thinking about putting on a dual steering stabilizer kit but I don't want to cover up a problem with a temporary solution.

Where should I go from here?

I'd start with the easy thing next, which is the track bar bushing and ball joint. You're right in saying that a dual stabilizer will only mask the symptom slightly.

Had a similar problem and it was the steering gear had play in it. Easy to diagnose, pull the drag link off the pitman arm. If there is any play whatsoever in the pitman arm I recommend replacing the steering gear. You can also get by for awhile by adjusting the quill on the steering gear in to take out the slop. Steering will be heavier and you won't feel the wheel return to center after making a turn.

So many different things seem to contribute to this condition. My 2015 has t had it yet, but my '04 had it and turned out to be worn camber kit bushings.

I think death wobble might be inevitably on these trucks. It's not "if", it is "when".

That's true of any vehicle with a solid front axle, like the millions of jeeps on the road.. That said, I'd rather have to deal with an easily fixed death wobble then deal with torsion bars ever again. Total garbage.

interesting, wonder why some trucks get it and some dont.

I have owned over the years various F250/350 trucks, a '86, '94, '98, '04, '14, and now a 2015. The only truck that had it was my '04, only several thousand miles after a leveling kit was installed on the front end.

Once the new camber kit was installed, it never returned. I guess we'll see on my '15.

If the above chassis parts test ok next step is to swap the front and rear tires. I'll bet one of the fronts are out of balance. These tires are tricky to properly balance. A good tire tech will play around with tire clocking if there's too much weight needing to be added to get it to balance.
Check the rims and tires for runout in both axes. A hop in a tire will never balance even with road force...ask how I know.

Also check your shocks, they should be changed at 40,000 to 50,000 miles max.

My 08 F 250 developed the death wobble, shook the wheel outta my hand at 30 mph, had one leaking and one blown covered with oil.

Just wanted to give an update, truck didn't have death wobble for a few times I drove it, and now its back and seems to be almost every bump I hit on the highway it will happen.....awfully annoying with my 8 month old son in the back seat.

I just changed out my trac bar and I did notice the ball joint I attach it to wasn't as tight as I would like it to be. I will know on my way home tonight if it made a change or not although I did order that ball joint as well.

Tires are balanced perfectly, I balanced them myself where I work, they actually took minimal weight.

My plan is to replace the trac bar ball joint if it hasn't gone away, next will be shocks, and after that the dual steering stabilizers

Here’s another update. After the new trac bar problem went away 100% no more feedback thru the steering wheel, I can hit the biggest bumps in the road without any issues.

Good to hear. Glad you were able to fix it and hopefully it’s a permanent fix. Thanks for updating, I’m sure that it will help somebody out.

Yes agreed thanks for the update its important to close the thread loop.

EDC8008...agreed on the shocks. The single best improvement I made was 4 Rancho 9000s Day to Night comparison on the cement truck like ride.
