2003 F250 5.4 Speedo
Hey guys, I bought a 5.4 F250 in the spring and it has been a good truck overall. The ABS light was on, so I pulled the dash apart to remove the bulb since a wiggle on the ABS connectors didn't fix it. The truck is mostly a plow truck and beater, so I was not worried about having ABS anyway. When I pulled the cluster out, it had an LED for th elight, not a quarter turn bulb. I saw I could put a piece of tape over it, and go on my way; however, I only saw this in hindsight, in reality something came over me, and I thought popping the LED off would be a great idea. Once I popped the LED off the speedometer stopped working. Immediately seeing what I had done, I knew I had to get a new cluster. I ordered one, and installed it expecting it to solve my problems. With a new cluster installed, it wasn't any different. When I popped the LED off I had a CEL for a speedometer circuit code or something, with the new (used) cluster I have a code for the speed sensor. I replaced the speed sensor on the rear differential, but it did not fix it. I do not know if it started to do it after the cluster swap, or the new sensor, but when I first start the truck and let it warm up the speedo jumps all over the place, I do not recall this happening when I had the original cluster. Thanks for any help and advice.

OK, so the rear sensor is for abs. I don't know which transmission you have so I am not sure which sensor on the transmission is speed. I do know if it's a 5R110 transmission the rear sensor on the top of transmission is the speed sensor. You may want to check that sensor. Getting a good diagnostic on the abs would have saved you somewhat of a headache.

Ok, I went away for Christmas and now that I am back, I have to figure this out. I replaced the speed sensor on the transmission today, that was a huge case of an easy job gone wrong. I tried to work it slow, back and forth. The top still broke off, I decided that since the truck is a beater, and rotted out, cutting a hole in the floor sounded like a MUCH better idea than dropping the tranny! I was able to jam a bolt into the broken off piece, and it still took a lot of force on a 2 foot bar to pop it out. Anyway, all of this was in vein, I still don't have a working speedometer. I listed th ecodes below, any ideas? thanks for any help!
