F8000 vs L8000
#3
I would expect that a LN8000 would be easier to work on as they were built from the beginning to be commercial trucks and worked on by union mechanics on hourly rates. F models are adopted from light duty trucks which are not as mechanic friendly. A tilting hood also makes engine access easier.

Ive come to understand that the F8000 is the 33k frame and engine size of the L8000. Yea the cabs are different but the tilt hood is also on the F800. Mine is VIN wise a F800, but it has a double frame and a 10L engine. So when it comes to ordering parts engine and chassis i have to go with the F8000 if its listed or the L8000. Cab is a F350, hood cowl is an F800.
its been a learning curve restoring this truck. Thank God for this forum!

What year models are they and is the L model a L or LN.
F series with tilt front sounds like a 80's or 90's model but then I've never seen a 90's model with a 3208 Cat diesel so I'm guessing 80's model.
L series has a longer hood with the complete fender make onto the hood.
LN has a shorter hood with the back 1/4 of the fender attached to the cab.
The hundred numbers indicated the truck had a gas engine, thousand numbers indicated the truck had a diesel engine.
Later Ford quit putting the thousand numbers on the trucks and called them all hundred numbers.
Local mill I worked at has a 71 LT800 with 391 gas, 84 LT8000 with 3208 Cat diesel, 83 LNT8000 with 3208 Cat diesel.
The 94 L800 we have at the fire dept has a 8.3 Cummins diesel
I have a 93 F800 with a 8.3 Cummins.

Mines an 84. It was a custom ordered truck for a county in Mississippi, then sold to a farm there and modified to haul different types of trailers. Im not sure what the county had the truck designed for, but its an absolute brut of power. Besides the Cat, it has a split 6.14/8.41 rear end.
