Removing leaf in the rear

has anyone tried to remove a leaf in the rear of dually to make it ride better and adding airbags for when towing?

I've read on some of the air bag vendor sites that this is the only way to get an improved ride with airbags, so yes, I'm sure someone has done it

Here is a link to a thread that lists the rear spring configurations. Note that the DRW F-350 and F-450 have the same rear springs rates. My experience with leaf packs on Jeeps is that you don't get a significantly better ride until you go with thinner leaves. Also, fewer leaves can lead to axle wrap when you get on it.

My suggestion is to swap the entire leaf pack from an F-250, not just pull a single leaf.

While I do not have a dually, many members have reduced air pressure in tires to improve ride, and air them back up when towing. Maybe that's an option? Personally, I wouldn't mess with a spring pack.

I have known of a few cases of people removing the bottom very thick overload leaf spring and getting better ride quality. It is extremely stiff and the rear suspension can slap against it causing bucking. Good luck and let us know how i goes.

I’ve already ordered the sulastics But was just curious as to if I could get an even better ride by removing a leaf. If I were to remove the middle leaf. It would essentially make it just like my 250 spring pack. I have a 450 now btw

Crud. I just realized I didn't include the link in my original post, here it is:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...rear-axle.html

There is a chart in this thread that lists the spring rates for various configurations. While I agree that pulling a leaf will improve ride, I'm not sure it will make it a 250 pack, I believe those leaves are thinner.

Hi I would like to know if you removed a leaf and if the ride is much better. I'm thinking on doing the same to my truck.

I have a F350 DRW and changed over to 19.5 wheels & tires much like a F450 has. I tried lowering the air pressures down and the ride is a lot better. But i ran into the problem of having a very wandery handling truck. So i aired the 245s back up and the handling is much more precise. The bumpier ride is what it is and i am happy to trade the bumpy ride for a truck that drives straight.

below 80psi in the fronts and it wanders badly. The rears dont make as much difference being aired down but i still run them at 80psi.

I do like the idea of a F250 spring pack in the rear to soften things up. Then i wonder what the unloaded stance would be? Level?

If your just after a better ride, disconnect the sway bars. This will allow for more articulation but will feel spongy in curves.

If you're looking for a better ride, get rid of the factory shocks. At the least, go to Bilstein 4600 or the 5100. So much better than the factory units. I changed out the shocks on my 14000# GVW 350 dually and there is a huge difference in ride. In my opinion, it is more planted and less harsh over bumps and bad roads.
