I wanted to give some feedback to the board on tips I picked up working my fuel guage this weekend. (this is if you have traced it to the sending unit) This was on a 97 Ranger.
1. It is much easer to pull the bed than the tank! Six bolts, one connector at the bumper and three screw on the fuel filler. It was ready to lift off in thirty minutes. Hint; don't remove the clamp on the fill tube, because its a tube-in-a-tube its a bear to get back to on, just take the three screws from the filler neck and push it in.
2. The bed is not heavy, two people can lift it off just have something to set it on, I put mine on a plastic lawn table.
3. Lots of dirt will be around the unit, clean it BEFORE you pull it!
4. BIG TIP HERE.... when you pull the unit out plug the connector back on and pull the float arm up then have someone turn the key on for a moment (cover the tubes with a rag to keep the fuel off you). It may be a bad float! Mine was full of fuel but the unit was good.....and the float is WAY cheaper! So if it reads where you put it then its the float. (you will know, it should be light but it will feel heavy when its full of fuel)
Remember, don't stick the new sending/pump in before you check this or they won't take it back.
So for less than three hours labor and no money (I had an extra float in my garage) I fixed my fuel guage!

Sounds like something I need to try.On my 1992,when the truck is running, the gauge always sits on empty. When the key is off, sometimes it wanders towards the full side. But,when the key is turned on,back to the "E" it goes. Will the float or the sender/pump fix my problem?Could it be something behind the instrument panel? When I had the instrument panel out putting in my glow gauges, all of the connections looked good.Auto Zone has the sender/pump for a little over $100.Would that be the one to go with or not?
I went to my local Ford dealer and ordered the float. It was a little over $6.It will be in next week and I'm going to try to install it,going by the instructions in the first post.I sure hope that it's the float instead of the sending unit...
Not sure where to post this But I have a 93 Ranger Have changed Fuel pump ,fuel filter, fuel relay, checked fuse and emer.shut off switch ...Pump will not run ...except for when it sits overnight will start and run but if i shut it off the pump wont start again....I am not a noob but I am apparently missing something ...any ideas????
