I have heard from a few people that just before you do an oil change you can put tranny fluid in with your oil to clean everything out. Is this true? If so what type of fluid and how much should I put in? Would it be ok to leave it in for a week or is that too long? Thanks for the help.
LOL! I read both postings and they were both for an against it. Maybe I will just add 1 litre of fluid let it IDLE for about 10 minutes then drain it and put some good motor oil in. I'll try it out this Saturday (if it doesn't rain) and let you know how it turns out. I might even treat my van to a nice brand new Motocraft oil filter (if it's good this week!)
The transmission fluid is basically a 20 wt oil that is going to reduce the viscosity of whatever you have in the engine. That is supposed to help clean the engine. While I can say I have tried it, I wouldn't do it again. If you need an engine cleaner, I would suggest using Auto-rx. It will not hurt the engine or seals and it works slowly over 700-1000 miles. Better safe than sorry. www.auto-rx.com
I would use a good dual rated SL / CI-4 oil on the next oil change. The diesel rated oil is supposed to have more detergents in it to clean things out. Should protect the engine better too. Have fun!
Flash, is there a reason why you wouldn't do it again. I don't want to wreck my engine but if it's not going to wreck it I might as well do it...just to get it to run quieter.
