What do we know about these? I went ahead and picked one up tonight at Walmart (I went there to pick up a few quarts of Chevron supreme). I checked out the filter - it looked ok enough (I know, appearences can be decieving, but it looked pretty classy, with the glossy black paint and pretty silkscreen )
I did a few searches - apparently the ST filters are made by Champion labs, who apparently makes the Mobil 1 filters (and another brand, I just can't remember).
Granted, the ST isn't likey to be as good as the ultra premium Mobil 1 filter, but how does it rate against the Motorcraft FL-820s that I've been using?
BigMatt,
I have several Super Tech ST2 filters. I bought them while they still had the bypass valve located in the base end where the filter screws onto the oil filter adapter. Out of curiosity I have cut one open. They seem to be well made. No cardboard or anything like that. Much better than the Frams I have cut open. Nearly identical to an AC Delco PF1250 filter I have. Very close inside to an FL820S. Surface area of the filetering media is very nearly the same. They supposedly have a synthetic blend filtering media and are practically the same as Bosch Premium filters. I have not however bought any more since the bypass valve was moved to the other end of the filter. They do seem to work well if anyone can really tell how well an oil filter works??? The filter on my 97 F-150 is mounted vertically so to me the anti drainback valve is not as big a concern as it may be for others. I hope they keep making them but when my supply of 12 - 14 more runs out I will probably use Motorcraft simply because of the bypass valve.
The anti-drain back valve keeps some oil inside the filter after you turn off the motor. That way you get oil circulating faster at a cold start up since the filter doesn't have to get full first.
Champ makes several quality levels of filters. The SuperTech is likely to be the lowest, but everything that I have read says that Champ makes a decent filter.
That design is not on the correct end of the filter for Ford specs, as Seldont pointed out.
The other consideration is that the SuperTech filter has a nitrile anti drainback valve, while the 820 filter has a silicone ADV, usually considered to be a much better material.
I really can't say which one filters oil better because of limited data.
To each his own, but for only a $1 more at Walmart, I think the 820 is a better value.
My friend is an automotive manager at wal-mart.
He says that they used to have the quaker state address on the supertech filter box, recently they changed that to the walmart address.. That would seem to indicate quaker state makes supertech filters?
I do not think Quaker State is in the filter manufacturing business. They just license the name. Quaker State filters were Frams. (do not know what they are now) Castrol filters sold at K-Mart were made by Wix. Super Tech is definitely Champion Labs. Also in the Champion Labs family is Bosch, STP, Mobil1, Champ, Lee and I am sure there are several more. The Motorcraft filters which come from the factory on new engines are also Champion Labs. Purolator makes the aftermarket Motorcraft with the biggest difference I can see is the type of anti drainback valve. Do not know if you guys have ever heard of Fred's Discount stores? I was in one today and they had Havoline filters. $1.50 each. I had to look at them. They are Purolators. I had to buy a couple just because. I will cut one open and if you guys want to know what I find let me know. They look Identical to the low end Purolator from what I can see so far.
