Hey guys. I'm having a horrible time cleaning the factory 20"s. Obviously this is due to lower quality brake shoes spitting a TON of dust, but there is no reason to put ceramix shoes on the Blue Ox at this point.
I've used Eagle One wheel cleaner for years. Just make sure you buy the clearcoat safe wheel cleaner. On the thicker brake dust I use a nylon scrub brush or a vegatable scrub brush.
Ok so the P21S is NOT inexpensive, but if it'll make cleaning this massive wheels easier and not harm them, then I'm all for it.
I loved the Ceramix pads that were on my Explorer (from Napa). They had great stopping power and barely spit any dust. Can't wait to get new pads on the Blue Ox. Probably going to need new rotors too. They have a slight warp to them.
No it ain't cheap! But you don't need much. A little goes a long way...
I give each wheel 2-3 squirts then use a wheel brush (also from Detailer's Domain and no I don't work them) to spread it around and get into all the nooks and crannies.
I bought some in March (1000ML), I use it almost every week, and I still have 1/4 bottle left.
I just put new akebono pads and new rotors(front only) on my truck to replace the semi-metallic pads, HUGE difference in the amount of dust. And the dust that does come off is not black, it is hard to see. I just used a car wash product and water to clean them before though, and elbow grease
I don't care how good a wheel cleaner is...cleaning these wheels is still a chore no matter what. Ceramic pads is the best upgrade I've done yet. Totally worth the $50 for the pads and the hour labor to put them on...
A soft brush and some soap and water is all I ever had to use when I stayed on top of it. I tried just about everything autozone had to offer and nothing ever worked as advertised. Water, soap, elbow grease always worked just as well. However, if you're going to clean them every week probably doesn't matter if its the $25 specialty detail shop stuff or the $5 Autozone stuff. After a week there really won't be enough build up to necessitate the harsh chemicals.
Let it go a month and you'll just about need a chisel.
agree 100% with Bridge. The pads have def. been worth it. Like I said, SO much less dust and what does come off is not that black stuff like before, it is like light gray, easy to clean.
Old redneck tricks:
1-part water, 1-part Mr Clean, 1-part vinegar...put it in an old spray bottle and soak em down. Then some AJAX on a rag on the raised white letters only---not on the rims.
Then 5 min later hose or pressure wash the wheels---cheap solution & makes em shine like new.
