Cleaning Brake Dust from rims

The brake dust on my front rims seems next to impossible to remove. Truck is a 10 F150 4x4 Lariat.

What are people using to remove this? I expect to get in and scrub, but don't want to damage the rims as well.

Thanks in advance.

Any soap and water will work. Never use a 'wheel' cleaner spray. Most will damage the clear coat. The key is not to let the brake dust build up and eat away the coating. If the dust has gotten into the clear, soap won't help and you have a whole nother problem.

"P21S is a safe, pH-controlled, non-acid, non-lye based detergent that provides terrific cleaning and guarantees not to damage any type of wheel: painted, clear-coated, polished or anodized."

Well that is dandy. Most wheel cleaners say safe on all wheels, yet will still cloud or damage the clear coat. Soap and water is a safe bet and cheaper.

Simple Green diluted 50/50 with water, let it soak for about 5 minutes (don't let it dry, try to do it in the shade) scrub with an old wash mitt and rinse! You can get simple green at any hardware, grocery store, wal-mart, etc. It's in the household cleaners. It has many automotive uses!

The beauty of P21S can be ordered as a gel. You can leave it on the wheels for up to 2 hours.

P21S Wheel Cleaner 2

As you know Simple Green runs off and should not be allowed to dry on the wheels.

About as much as you do for offering advice and an opinion without having ever tried it.

It's really simple. I've tried car wash soap, Simple Green (straight and diluted), 'mag cleaners', etc. and nothing works as well as this stuff.

Buy it or don't buy it - I really don't care one way or the other.

+2 on the P21S.

I also put a coat of wax (Collinite 845- marine grade) on my clear coated wheels every few months. It helps to prevent the dust from adhering and washes off quite easily. Once year I pull off the wheels and clean, clay bar and wax both the outer and inner rims.

If you clean them once a week you will only need soap and water.
Let it cook on there for a few months...now you start needing "wheel cleaners"
