Unhappy Ignition Control Module swap ?

Am replacing a 360 in my '75 F-250 SC with a 390 from a '76 F-150. The module in the '75 has "melted" the Epoxy or ?? like hot candle wax { black sticky goo). Will the module from the '76 work in the '75 ? The '75 has no emissions goop/etc on it. The only vacuum lines go to the brake booster + dizzy + the manifold gauge on the dash. <{ part if the reason I bought the truck in the first place.]

The '75 module (green grommet) is a one year only module (just as the '74 module is 'black grommet') they will not interchange with the '76 and up blue grommet modules.

The 1974 (Black) and 1975 (green) modules are Duraspark-I.

1976-1986 (Blue) 1977/1978 ((Red) aka No-spark) are Duraspark-II

1980-1983 (yellow) Duraspark-III

You have to match the color tab of the module exactly, as montana highboy states.

The 1975 green grommet module is still avaliable in the aftermarket sector, however they have been redesigned internally, and the blue wire will be missing on the replacement module.

There is also a BROWN and WHITE grommet module.

Brown is the high altitude module.

The white and yellow modules had a third connector for a vacuum sensor, basically to sense load on the engine and dial back some ignition advance.

The yellow module also relies heavily on the EEC-III computer as there is no magnetic pickup in the DS-III distributor. The EEC-III and Crank Position Sensor takes the Magnetic Pickups place on the DS-III system.

But we are getting off topic I'm afraid. But I am facinated by the the different DS systems used over the years. And with all those changes, the BLUE DS-II module is still concidered the best.

To all - thanks for the info. Could the '76 module be moved with the 390 into the '75 (with "other wiring") OR just replace the module and keep the dizzy from the '75 ? I've added a 'cap-adapt' and plug wires - years ago / still looks good. I'm thinking about getting the DUI HEI dizzy to 'clean-up' the engine a bit.

If you're eventually going with a DUI anyway i would just buy a replacement '75 module for the interim and not bother with swapping over the wiring harness.

Just loosened the module - part #D5AE 12A199 A1B. Used to work in the Predelivery Dept. of a Ford dealership when that "beast" was new... I remember a "Breakerless Ignition" before the Duraspark. ?? The plugs are both black if that means anything. My NPD catalog lists the module at $75.50.

The green grommet module is $75.50??? I don't think so, my truck has electronic ignition from a '75 (green grommet) and I replaced the module for like $25 and it works just fine.

Like 81 Explorer said the blue wire is deleted on the '75 replacement modules, i haven't had any luck with them but others have, i had to source a NOS module to work for me, let us know how you make out.

Much thanks for the info. Noted for later reference. The 390 is about ready to pull & stick in the basement for tear-down & rebuild. I may be using NEW 360 pistons for a bit more "kick". The old 360 was quite torquey - tll my X-son-in-law ran it out of oil. I'd still like to get hold of his neck < just for 20 seconds]
