Gas guage slow?

Okay, Saturday I was waiting for my fiance to get out of work in my truck for a while with the radio on. The "delay accessory power" or whatever it's called, turned off like 3 times and I turned it back on by turning the key to "ENGINE" and back to off. So afterwards we went to go filled up with ~20 gallons all the way to the top, the pump clicked 2 times and didn't fill anymore. So I got in my truck, fired it up and the gas guage stayed at the same place it was before BUT I noticed that after a bit of driving it slowly was moving. I turned it off and on several times with the same result. After about 20 minutes of driving the gas guage was finally at FULL. Wierd, seems ok now but I haven't refueled yet. So far it looks like it's accurate. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a 2004 XLT 4X4 Supercrew and it occasionally does same thing. I know the tank is full but it make take 30 minutes or more before it goes up to full mark. It might do it on 2 consecutive fill ups and then not again for 3-4. Not sure what problem is but min does it too.

Had same problem a few times on a '01 SCrew I had. The reason is this:

If you leave the ignition switch in the RUN position, it will happen.
If you turn the ignition to ACC or OFF (so that the guages all go to the left, or fall back to E, Low, etc.) then it won't happen.

I think I found this on a tech bulletin or from a website forum - can't remember - but try it for yourself and see.

While not applicable to the problem discussed above, I know that first-gen Expedition fuel guages will respond very slowly to fuel tank level changes if the amount of gas put in the tank is relatively small. I don't recall the exact threshhold for this behavior, but I put six gallons in my Expy yeaterday and it took a few minutes for the guage to respond.

I always turn my ignition to off and very seldom do I put in less than 20 gallons at a time. So I guess mine is not related to those problems mentioned. I can't find a pattern on mine whatsoever. It's so damned inconsistant on when it does it. It always fixes itself it just might take a little while. Thanks anyway for the responses. I'm sure if enough of us give some input we'll figure it out.

You are not alone. Mine did it once in a great while. Now it's getting much more frequent...as in once every 3-4 fill ups. And yes, I turn the truck off every time.

Just another thing to add to the list for my next dealer visit along with the rear end shuddering during low speed turns and wiper cowl vibrating like crazy on the freeway.

I can tell you guys this. This problem happened to me when I had about 7,000+or- miles on it. I had just went and filled up. I got on the road to head home and the guage still had not come up. I called the dealer and took the truck straight to them. The dealer told me that they pulled the gas card out of the truck and they did not see any problems with it. The purpose of the card (to the best of my understanding) among other things is to let the dealer know if there is something going on in the fuel system. The dealer gave me a bulletin about the problem. The dealer told me that it was probably due to some type of contamination in the fuel and recommended that I run a fuel system cleaner through the tank. The one that I use is made by Gumout I try to do that about when I rotate and balance (5,000 miles) my tires and I have not had any more problems with it since then. I am currently at about 23,500 miles on my truck now. I hope that this helps you. I would still have it checked out though. LOL

I believe this happens whenever ANY electrical item is running in the truck. I have only had this happen when I have had the iginition turned to acc. and at night when I would assume my lights had not shut-off before I started filling up. If my theory is true, if you had a door open and your overhead lights were on, this would also trigger the problem.

Mine will do it any time you trun the key on while you are filling the truck. Leave the key off while you are filling it and it never does it.

When it happens switch your message center to miles to go before E.. It also screws that number up. You can watch the number climb as the gauge creeps back up..

I had this same exact thing happen to me. Guage still read at half full even though I just filled up. And I did have it turned off. Has only happened once, two weeks ago.
I have 7500 miles on mine.

This happened to me this morning. Filled up from empty. Key was left in accessory position. ( I was recording the mileage info). After starting the truck the gauge read 1/4 full. Turning off and back on caused it to jump back to 1/4 full. Over the next ~20 minutes of driving, the gauge slowly crept up to the full mark. ~7k miles on the truck and have never noticed this before, although sure if I have ever left the key in accessory before.

Ford uses an anti-slosh module in the fuel guage system to keep the fuel guage from jumping around when stopping, accelerating, or turning sharply. I dont see one shown or mentioned in the wiring diagrams or the shop manual. So it is probably built into the cluster assy. When diagnosing a fuel guage with a guage tester you have to turn off the ignition for 30 seconds or more between test's so that you get an acurate reading. If not, the guage wont move or wont move all the way as expected. The same as filling up and momentarily switching to off and then back on. Try turning off for a minimum of 30 seconds and see if that solves your problems.

Actually I read on another forum na dthen experinced myself, to get an accurate reading from fuel guage after filling it is best to completely remove the keys from the ignition. if left in it can give false reading whe you start up the vehicle

Guys, I had this fixed on my 04 FX4. Did it once, then all the time. It would register correct, empty on the fuel gage, then after fill-up, would take 10-20 minutes or so to climb to full. Dealer ordered a 'fuel sending unit' for it. Took it back when part arrived and it was an hour install.
