heard a lot of negatives about a 2003 f 250 with 6,0..160.000 miles.. i have never owned one..got a 91 f350 with 7.3 idi non turbo..should i even bother?
As in all things - the details matter, There are good 6.0's for sale and there are bad ones. If you don't know how to identify the bad ones (ie you need scan tools to do so), then don't buy one.
Like Mark stated, there are good and bad ones out there. 160000 miles is not ridiculous my any means but just dependant on how it was maintained. Regular fluid changes? Are there any service records? What kind of numbers are available with a Torque Pro or Forscan monitor. These are OBDII apps which will give you a lot of info.
Im happy with my 03 6.0 now that ive got the temps under control. You HAVE to know what youre looking at, there are several good threads in here about them.
IIRC the 03's and early 04's, same engine, had fewer problems than the later years. At least with the EGR's anyway. Round vs. square. Been really happy with my early 04. If I were looking I would look at the early ones first with all else being equal.
If you can find out if the proper maintenance has been done on the engine and tranny over the 160k miles, then it shouldn't be an issue. If you understand going into the purchase knowing that you might have to spend $ on head gaskets and studs then you should be alright. I wouldn't trade my 03 for a later 6.0l. The later engines had their issues too.
Well pulled the trigger on a 03 6.0 with 143000 miles..2nd owner from 08 put 90000 on since..said he had it "bulletproofed" in 2010..drove home 90 miles with no issue..temps from trans ..engine ..and oil pressure were all half way in norms..seemed everything is kosher..does have a hard start..going to replace ALL filters asap..any other suggestions??? Owner claims ford serviced regularly. So used to the 7.3....at a loss wth this monster here..help out a noob at 6.0...
