My bed came with 1" holes up under the top rail. I think the plastic bed liner covers them. I don't remember using them. I'll have to look if I think to.

Would be cool if someone invented something recessed / recess-able. I wouldn't want those there all the time, potentially poking into my load.
In factory form, the reinforcement is welded to the backside of the panel. On the aluminum truck, it is riveted (if i am remembering correctly.)

There are already holes in the bed for these hooks on the trucks they are designed for, yes. But placing the hooks in the place you want them and marking the spots through the hooks is an easy way to mount them.

Concerning recessable hooks, you may want to look at modifying a set of bed pocket stakes that do recess, like the picture below, into the interior of the bed:

I would have been happy with the black ones, but now I'm going to have to look for chrome...
I have the part # and price for the chrome hooks in my original post with the photo. You can order them off the internet or your local dealer!

Yes, I saw that and thank you! But, I'm cheap and plan on buying them from the salvage yard. There are several yards near me, finding them shouldn't be a problem. The back plates seem to present the most difficulty at this time.

I went with 1200lb D-rings from Tractor supply(zinc coated as not to turn to rust the 1st time they get wet)
I also used grade 8 hardware
a 1" x 5" x 1/4" backer plate was also used

I instal 6 of them in my trucks
(2) in the rear stake pockets near the floor
(2) in the middle stake pocket holes. (on these the 1/4" backer plate is drilled and tapped to just thread the bolts into them)
(2) in the front of the bed in the floor.

I like the look of your D-rings Brad. How did you get the one in the back mounted low, next to the floor? Is the stake pocket next to the tailgate not closed?

I'm now thinking this is the way I will have mine. The trucks that have the factory hooks all have a recessed area in the bed so the hook does not stick out. My truck obviously doesn't have the recessed area, so the D-ring is probably a better solution.

Wait, the backer plate was five inches long...thats how you got the back ring low, the plate was long enough to manipulate from above. Right?

Brad, what brand of bed liner did you use? It appears to be holding up well.

Once you pull the taillight you will see what room you have to work with, better than I would explain it

That is Scorpion(AL's) brand bed liner. I cant lie, that is in my "show" truck and really doesnt see much use. But in the other trucks I have it in, it holds up great

I did the same thing on mine with Brad's recommendation. And I have to say it's a perfect spot, I use mine almost on a daily basis.

When you pull out the taillight you'll have plenty of room to work behind there.

Here is the backside after the taillight is removed.

I tried those on my previous truck and they are too large for the stake pocket holes.

I didnt reference them for the stake pocket holes, rather to fasten them to the bed floor. inner structure to make recessable tie down points.

Here is a follow up to show what I ended up installing. D-rings in each corner. Since I have a short bed, there are no stake pockets in the middle of the bed for additional D-rings. I remembered that after I bought six D-rings.

Front drivers side

Rear passenger side

Thank you to all that responded to my original post, particularly MRKROGOTH and DieselBrad. Even though I ended up not using original factory hooks MRKROGOTH did go above and beyond with part numbers, pictures and prices which will help others in the future.
