Adding 6 pin to existing trailer wiring

I wired in a 6 round pin receptacle this weekend in order to run my gooseneck trailer.

On other trucks ('78) I've been able to patch into the existing taillight wiring with a 'T connector'. However, I don't think that they are made for the SD. After talking to the guy I bought my hidden hitch gooseball from, I decided to do what he usually does and add a junction box.

Basically what I did was cut the wires going to the 7 pin receptacle and attach them to the mounts on the junction box with ring terminals. Then I brought the wire from the 6 pin that I mounted in the stake hole (in the box, not from the rail) through the frame and to the junction box.

A little trial and error was required with the connections, but all was done in a few hours. Now I need to install the hitch!

Might help someone out in the future!
Matt

You may also want to coat the junction block terminals with grease or battery terminal protector to keep them from corroding.

The best and easiest thing I have found is an adapter that plugs into the large 7 pin outlet and comes out in either a 6 pin, or flat four. When you are done pulling, the adapter just pulls out of the 7 pin connector and you throw it in the tool box till next time. They make adapters for all types of harneses. I have a 6 pin and a flat four for my small trailer. They are about 12.00 at Wal-mart.

Good Luck.

I knew that they made adapters for my purpose, but I wanted to have it hard wired in, and not have the trailer cord going over the tailgate where it could get caught when turning my gooseneck. And not have the tailgate obstucted. For these reasons I hard wired it in, and still kept my 7 pin if I ever need to pull something with that connection.
