After reading all the posts on premature ball joint failure, I went to my local Ford dealer and asked them about this phenomenon. After 13 seconds of hemming and hawing, they advised me that grease is needed in the ball joints. So I asked them if they greased them when they serviced my truck.... they said you cant grease them, they dont come with greaseable ball joints.
Long story short.... Ford is replacing my ball joints under warranty (my SD has 26,000 on it). they didnt ask if mine were bad, they just agreed to warranty them sight unseen.
Just thought I would pass this along to other SD owners.... FORD will stand behind their product.... at least my dealer did.
I'm glad that the stood behind their product. I know they did for me. But what of my TIME?? Why don't they just build a ###### greaseable ##### ball ##### joint?? Can it be that ###### hard???
(Upon Bigdeezil58's recommendation, insert "firetrucking" where you see ##### )
Has anyone chkd with aftermarket,to see if they have replacements
with grease fittings??????
Moog or Spicer!
They (Ford)should of given the option with a 3/16 bolt in the
ball joint,so we could put our own in.
Would be nice ,but then again $$$$$$$ they wouln't make!
I'll chk on aftermarket in a couple of days!

According to the service advisor at my dealer (who also happens to be my neighbor), Ford cant (or wont) retrofit the existing ball joints with zerks. I gave him a ration of for this but all he said was that Ford would replace the old ones.
