Help!
ok guys (and gals) I'm sick of looking through the threads and not really finding the answer to my question so I'm going to post here and hopefully you can help me out or at least point me in the right direction.recently bought an '04 f350 super duty quad cab 8' bed 4x4 6.0l power stroke. truck runs fantastic and i love it, huge step up from my rotted out '93 f150. problem being that it pops out of 4low when its shifted pack into drive. manual locking hubs with manual 4x shift lever. goes into 4h smooth and easily. getting it into 4l is a bitch and then it pops out. bought it knowing about this condition and was hopping it was an easy fix but i have yet to find a solution. i did however see that one poster had an f250 with the same issue and a response about adjusting the shift linkage. is that the case with my truck too? or is there another solution? also saw on that post from 6 years ago that there is possibly a fork with wear pads inside the transfer case that could be causing the issue? any suggestions? truck has 230000 on it.
I meant to answer this earlier as you ask a common question but I got sidetracked plowing snow, etc. There is nothing wrong with your truck. This is normal but you can do the following to make life easier:
- First, Low range is really a braking or control gear and should be used off road in anything but sand (use high range in sand as you don't want to dig in). It is extremely important to use it off road if you are climbing steep hills in case you lose traction and can't make the top. If you stop and shift into reverse you're vehicle will walk itself down the hill. Do NOT touch the brakes.
- Second, your truck has non-synchro, square cut gears. The only way to shift in and out of low range is get your truck rolling just so the wheels are moving. Shift the trans into neutral or put in the clutch and pull back on the transfer case lever smoothly but firmly. You should feel a solid gear engagement through the lever.
- Third, If you have been driving on a non-slip, hard surface the lever may not move. If so with the truck just basely moving make S turns until it pops out. I like to do this on a slight incline.
Good luck - - hope this helps.
