Goat a stock 49 F1 rear axle...Have replaced pinion seal twice it holds for a month or two then starts leaking again...I don't know what size it is. Is has 10 bolts. I'm in the process of cleaning the numbers on the back side. Numbers are on all four coners of it...What do I need to look for to find what rear end it is...Any help appreciated....Thanks Wayne
If all else is good internally (bearings, etc.), it's possible you have a small groove worn into your pinion gear, where the seal rides. That'll tear up a new seal and cause leaks pronto. If that is the problem, it's easily remedied with a "speedy sleeve", which can be installed by your trusty local machinist. The bad news is it might take another tear down to fix it.
Welcome to the board, please post your location in the upper right corner, it makes it easier to see where you're located. Knowing that there might be some one close by that can help out.
I have a stock rear axle sitting in my shop that I want to get rid of. If you were closer you could have it. I checked you profile and saw you're in OK, a bit too far to travel.
Shipping would kill you. I would think you could find one locally. The axle I have is out of an old truck a guy I know street rodded. As far as I can tell it doesn't leak.
Is your truck strickly stock? If not I'd look around for a pre-73 F-150 9", you'd have better gearing and it's almost a bolt in procedure.
I have rear end on CL for $75 OBO but if I knew a FTE member needed it, it would be yours just to pick up. My only warning would be you'd have to endure my BSing for an hour or so.
Sorry to say it's 305sbc powered with 700r4 tranny. Frame and chassis is stock tho...BS'n is a trait of mine also..Most say they cant tell if im lying or telling the truth so they don't pay much attention to what I'm saying. If you wern't so far away I'd take you up on it. Thanks think I better try to stay local...Good talking to you..Wayne
If you have that powertrain set up, then you should be running either a Chevy 10-bolt or a Ford 9". The stock rear end is geared way too high to effectively provide you with good speed while having that kind of powertrain. Instead of keep dumping money into the stock rear end, find yourself a 9" and rebuilt that instead.
57-67 F100 9" rear end is a direct bolt in. 68-72 requires minor modifications to the spring perches. You'll also need to find rear shock brackets from an F3 or buy a set from Speedway Motors.
She runs down the highway at 70 mph with no strain I drove her to georgia and back last summer. No problems at all, she got pretty good mileage. The overdrive helped a bunch..
