Question Turn switch? Signals only turn on with brakes. Can I bypass?

Hello!

I think my turn signal switch in the column is bad. Can you confirm?

My turn signals don't work when I attempt to turn them on using the arm on the steering column.

But when I press the brakes, all 4 turn indicators light up solid.

Previously to this, the turn signal switch would no longer hold the signal left or right. When I would press down on the arm, the indicator would light up, but I would have to hold the arm in that position. Otherwise the arm would just spring back to center and the indicator would stop.

It seems to me that I need to replace the switch at the bottom of that turn signal arm. I imagine the wiring for the brakes and the indicators are somehow related.

If my assumption is true; how far down do I have to dig in to the column before I get to that switch? I have a very bad history with steering columns. I lose or break all the little parts. But I've never torn in to a Ford column before. I'm hoping the switch is very close to the steering wheel and someone is going to tell me that this is the easiest thing to replace. *hoping*

I'm also wondering if someone can tell me which wires in the bundle that leads in to the column are managing the signals and brakes. I have an unused toggle switch on my dash and I would prefer to temporarily route the indicators through that dash switch than destroy yet another steering column.

With no affect, I've already replaced the little metal "can" type thing in the fuse box that is related to the turn signals. Is that officially named the turn single relay?

In terms of location in the column, once you take off the steering wheel, the turn signal switch is the very first thing you find. It's held in by three phillips-head screws, if memory serves, and the arm comes out by unscrewing it as well (near the base, you'll see some flat indents, that's where you can stick a crescent wrench to loosen it up). The wiring runs out the back and all the way down the column where it attaches into a gray plastic horseshoe connector, so the tricky/irritating part to installing a new one is running that bundle of wires back down there, although the covering of the steering column is essentially just a plastic "sleeve" that you can take off if need be. Other than that, though, it's not too complicated of an ordeal. Good luck and have fun!

@Caleb H: That's good news! Thank you.

@NumberDummy: Thanks very much for the part numbers.

@tpcgregsheh: My previous response to you described me replacing the flasher. I'm reading that there is an additional relay nearby. I'll track it down. Thanks!

No additional relay. Just what numberdummy mentioned and the fuses.

A new turn signal switch is around 95% positive of what you need to get it fixed.
