I have a 1997 f150 2wd super cab. 4.6 v8 with the 4r70w. driving up the road tonight i stepped on it to go up a hill and when it went to shift into 3rd gear there was nothing there. i dropped it into manual 2 and got where i needed to.
it will not shift into 3rd gear at all now. never had an issue before tonight...
the other problem is now it is making a horrible whining noise, almost like a dry PS pump, when it is in P N or OD. the sounds goes away in M1 M2 and R... fluid level is good...
any ideas, i really dont want to replace the trans....
haveing gone through this, I want to save you some time and money. I changed mlps, all wiring haresses, cleaned valve body, changed oil and filter, changed servos, and acumulaters, all through the bottom . now the truck is at a trans shop, never did get it right. found that the problem, is that the torque converter goes bad, then wacks out o/d band, and clutches. you can still drive [I did anyway] with o/d canceled on the gearshift. that will go for a while, then 3rd quits, makeing you repair it. tough doing 65 with the tach at 4 grand. every trans shop is different, price ranges from $1400 to $3000, the last one po'd me, I told him I could buy a new truck for that amount. from what I'm told, this is a very good trans, so it is worth fixing.
that's cool though, put in the jy one, and practice on the other one, rebuilding it, it's already broke, so you can't hurt it, who knows you may be succesful, and have a new tranny ready when the jy one goes up
