I need help diagnosing the source of a noise in my c-6 automatic tranny in an '87 f250. I've got a whining sound coming from the front of the transmission. It sounds like it is in the general area of the torque converter. What is different to me from most noises is that it is constant. It doesn't vary with engine speed or road speed. The only change in its sound is when I go from neutral (or park) into a gear. When the engine drops at going into gear, there is a second or two in which the whine drops in its frequency. Then it immediately returns to the constant whine of before.
Can anyone give me a clue as to what this might be? Any help will be appreciated. The transmission works perfectly, and if the whine is a sound of trouble coming, I would like to repair it before any damage is done.
The fluid looks and smells good and is right up to where it ought to be. It (the tranny fluid) has about 10-12000 miles on it and a new filter. Got any ideas what's going on?
My thoughts were that, as the noise is constant and does not change with engine speed, it is unlikely to be a rotating part. So I thought maybe air in the pump due to low fluid level or maybe frothing of the fluid due to too much fluid.
However as the fluid and fluid level are good that is ruled out.
Can`t think of anything else, other than the fluid, that would make a noise that wouldn`t change with engine speed.
An off-the-wall possibility, check the vacuum line from the transmission where it connects to the intake manifold. Sometimes a vacuum leak can sound like a whine.
