I recently had the gears changed from 3.55 to 4.56 in my truck. Now, on deceleration I hear whine the entire time. Even when I let off the gas at 60 mph, the whine is constant until I come to a stop. I hear nothing when accelerating or running at a constant speed. The noise is definitely noticeable, but not very loud - nothing the radio wouldn't take care of.
The truck is a 2004 F150 FX4 with posi-traction. I had 20" wheels put on, that's the reason for changing the gears. I believe the sound is coming from the rear but I'm not positive about that yet.
The shop that did the work also noticed the noise when test driving it after completing the work. They told me they will order a new set of gears and reinstall if the noise is too annoying for me, but they had never encountered this problem before.
Has anyone encountered this before? Any ideas as to what would cause it, or if it will help to put in a different set of gears?
sounds like they didn't get the gears set up quite right. When you swap gears, you check the drive and coast portion of the gear to make sure it's right. If one or the either is off, it will whine or worse.
You went to 4.56's cause you put on 20" rims? Usually people who put on larger diameter tires regear. Anywho, it's most likely incorrect pattern on the coast side or the gearset is just loud, do you know by chance what brand gearset they installed?
