97 F150 4x4 XLT Supercab, Starting was intermittant and now won't start at all. Basically I was either getting an immediate start after turning the key or just electrical on (dash lights/radio, etc) - no signal to solenoid.
(The starter motor is only a year or 2 old and appears to be fine, no telltale starter issues noted; battery brand new).
Looking for troubleshooting tips ...
How do I remove the steering column cover to get at the ignition switch ?
Where is the neutral safety switch?
The NSS (known properly as the DTR sensor), assuming you have an automatic, is on the side of the transmission.
Half-split the circuit:
Check for battery voltage at the small wire on the starter relay when it's supposed to be cranking. If voltage is present, check the starter relay and the starter motor (and its wiring).
If battery voltage is missing at the relay's small terminal, check the DTR to keyswitch (via fuse F21) circuit.
Up in these parts the government run insurance monopoly had the government pass a law that all vehicles must have immobilizers fitted, their limp dicked way of dealing with youth auto theft (punish the violated not the violators). These things are legendary for their quality problems to everyone but the organizations that endorse them.
So after forcing the public to install the devices (or take the vehicle off the roadways) they wash their hands of all responsibility. Fortunately a guy at one of the government accredited installation shops offered to help me out after hours and I was able to avoid most of the $700 replacement tab. Hopefully the new device lasts longer than the 2 years the previous one did .....
It's an aftermarket immobilizer required / chosen / installed by our government agencies ...
just not supported by the same.
... apologies for the rant. 4th time I've had issues with the freaking thing that I didn't want installed in the first place, and there's nothing I can do about it except rant or kick something in the garage.
We have a problem with youth stealing automobiles in these parts. Our justice system has no current way of punishing or controlling the offenders. The government also owns the automobile insurance provider (we can't get private insurance like you can). Rather than implement changes to punish the offenders (youth justice system) the government passed a law forcing the owners of the 200 most stolen vehicle models to install the immobilizer.
I'm all for laws that punish criminals, I'm not for laws that protect them.
