What does the vacum modulator do on an automatic transmission? I heard the screw within the modulator where the vacum line connects adjusts it somehow and what does this adjustment do?

As I understand it, it works off of vacuum from the engine and basically tells your transmission when to shift. The screw is to adjust it for a better shift if need be.
