Road Draft Tube replacement ??

Hi All,

Haven't posted for a while. Been busy finishing the restoration of my 47 1 ton. Nearly done and after test drives I noticed that the "road draft tube" in my rebuilt 53 AB motor is spewing a fine mist of gook onto my freshly detailed suspension and chassis. I read in the Flathead Jack catalog that its okay to get rid of the tube but the plugs he sells are described as for moving the breather to the rear of the manifold. Can I just remove the road draft tube, plug that hole, and get by with the existing single top breather without hurting anything? (the engine is 99% stock and the truck has a top speed of 55 MPH ). Your flathead expertise greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Neil

thank you

Thank you for the reponse. Its a good idea. The 1% of the engine thats not stock is a helmet style air cleaner with a paper cartridge type filter. I don't know if I could recycle the oily vapors through that unit.

best,

Neil

Hi Neil, check out the 'techno' page on the Ford Flathead V8 forum, there is a wealth of information here or post your question. Come to think of it, I think there is a post with pics of how a guy fitted a P.C.V valve.

Are you using a 49-53 intake? If so you can get a frost plug to fit the hole drill it to accomodate a neoprene grommet and install a PCV valve.

A related question

Thank you to both Steve and 5 Star for the very helpful information. Anyone who hasn't looked at the flathead v8 forum should check it out. It looks like adding a PCV valve in place of the road tube could work . Currently my stock manifold's vacuum port is teed to feed the wipers, the vacuum switch on the new C-4 transmission and the brake booster on my updated master cylinder . This is all working . Would it be OK to add another tap for the PCV ?

Thank you,

Neil

Neil, was just talking to a friend who is heavy into the Flatheads. I didn't know that you had all that other equipment hooked up to the Vacum Port.

Anyway here was the answer, if you did what I had suggested and run it into the Vacum Port you would probably have issues with the Transmission shifting properly.

his suggestion was to run a 1/2 inch hose from where the Road Draft Tube was located, and drill a hole at the base of your Air Filter close to the Carb and it will run directly into the Carb

You can use as I suggested in my earlier post using a Frost Plug drilled to accomodate the Grommet and PCV Valve.

You definitly need the Crankcase Ventilation, or you will have oil comming out through the Dip Stick Tube or elsewhere. Then you will have a problem with the Oil Mist.

Are you happy with the 55 mph? If not there was a guy in our club who had the same issue, and he dropped a later model F-250 Diff with 3.54 into his Truck and it made a big difference. He mentioned there was no alterations to do it fit in there like a glove and the bolt pattern was the same for the wheels. You could then go to 16 inch wheels, if you still have the 17 inch split rims.

Hope this helps you a little, and good luck.

Thanks again

This makes good sense to me and confirms that the earlier post about running a hose to the aircleaner will work on my truck. Thank you!

I have actually replaced the rear end with a 9" 3.70 and have installed 5x 5.5 hubs with new disc/drum brakes and 16 " wheels. Also, new springs and tube shocks. But its still a 1 ton flatbed---it rides like a truck! 55 is plenty!

Best,

Neil
