42'-47' front clip question

Hey all, I am thinking about welding My fenders and grille all together to make a smooth one piece front clip. My question is, has anyone here done this? I would like to know the pros and cons before I do it. I'd hate to start doing this and then find out it's more trouble than it's worth. Thanks, Dan

I have heard, but never seen one (most are glass). It would all be in the alignment (back side especially). You would need to probably weld the inside portion of the seam as well. I hung mine conventionally..

And you can see the back (cowl end) alignment considerations. Good luck !

I wouldn't do it if you do not want to see stress cracks in the already highly stressed areas like the corners of the grill panel.

Here is a pic taken at our local show in 2008. The 46 owner is local too. Front end has been made all one piece, and it isnt glass. Looks great, but I would hate to have to put it on and take off.

Note the flareout on the upper radiator shroud piece, to allow a wider but shorter radiator.

I've got a '46 panel that I'm building right now. My plan is to weld the whole front end together with a frame following the seam of the grille/fenders/wheel well that connects to the lifting/lowering mechanism. I think this will take the stress of the movement. I do have the advantage of a box frame to mount everything on/in.

Yes I'm going to bolt the fenders & hood together with spacers so the correct gaps will be retained. I've moved the radiator back towards the engine (flathead) and made a tilt crossmember that will sit/bolt in the 6 cylinder position on the front x member (clearance for A/C condensor when tilting). I think it will be necessary to construct an internal frame to hold the panels securely. At the moment I'm fitting the cab out which is in primer, door locks, filling unwanted holes, cut the dash out last weekend to fit an aluminum dash insert I made. Good luck with the tilt set up, keep us posted, Regards, Steve.
