Question For Dan Kwikkordead

Tried to pm this to Dan, but attachments are not allowed with pm's, so please bear with me at least until Dan sees it. If it upsets anyone, just zap it. It is a photo of under the hood on my Vdub and I want to know where that nylon vacuum line near the top left is supposed to go. It goes from the reservoir to where you see it hanging. Thank you for putting up with my crap.

Don't worry, Dan knows all about this car, but in case anyone else may have the answer it is an '86 Cabriolet. I also need to know where in the world the damn air filter is. It looks like it is installed in the same box as the fuel distributor. But just the fact that I don't even know where it is tells me I may never have changed it. But keep in mind this car sat parked for years and the last time I did use it, it was primarily as a tow dingy and as a runabout for one summer in Myrtle Beach. Most of the miles on it are as the result of being towed behind my motor home or PSD. Another funny little thing about this car. I was cruising around Charlotte today with the top down just enjoying myself with the top down and a man and his daughter chased me down honkiing their horn like crazy. I pulled into a side street and stopped and they got out and walked up to me and said. "We love your car, is it for sale right here on the spot?" Too funny, I've owned at least 5 Corvettes in my life, and that has never happened to me before.

That's too funny Mark. I hope you were smart enough to tell them to make you an offer you couldn't refuse on the car. If you can't follow the intake hose down and find the filter I don't know what to tell you. I'm also no help on the vacuum line. If Dan doesn't see it, maybe Pete's son will and he can post a picture of under his hood. May not be the same kind of VW, but it might give you some ideas.

No, it's definetely a vacuum line. The washers work just fine. I had to replace the pump on those. Dan is either asleep at the switch or tired of fooling with me (I would not blame him) in regard to this car. He's been a huge help, I almost wish I was near the rain capital of the world once in awhile just to get inside his shop, but damn that's a couple of thousand miles from me.

That vacuum reservoir is a buffer for the climate control. It tee's into the vacuum source. It get's the vacuum from the power brake booster line that runs across the top of the valve cover.
See attached picture, red circle is where it goes. It will vastly improve your idle due to patching that rather large vacuum leak. You might want to get some new vacuum line to help hold the hose in place. Be careful of the plastic nipple that is on the big vacuum line, they are brittle. Get a razor knife and slice the old piece of vacuum line lengthwise to help release it from the nipple if necessary.

The best part of owning a rare VW, you get chased down by perfect strangers who want to hug you just because you own that car.

I'm guessing that you have one of the deluxe versions that has AC equipped convertable, hence the vacuum controlled climate control. If all goes well you will be able to direct air from the vents now and not just out of the defrost vents.
The air filter is down below the fuel distributor and yes it is a PITA.

Since we're on VWs here, what filters would you recommend using for a 96 Passat TDI? I've put close to 10k miles on mine since I bought it in November, and I'm sure it's likely due for an air filter, and maybe a fuel filter too. They must not be TOO bad since I'm still getting ~44mpg highway and somewhere in the 30s in town. If only the PSDs could do that!!! HEAVEN!!!

That golf ball mod must be doing it some good.

Mann or Mahle brand air filters and Bosch fuel filters are my favorite.
Over the years, I've settled on those brand of filters because of the large difference in the quality of construction.
Bosch fuel filters filter media is constructed the exact same way that the Ford AIS air filter media is except it is much finer. If you saw one open it will be rolled up like a roll of paper. Unrolling it will reveal the little passages that are identical in fashion to the AIS air filter, but much smaller. Other brands are simply pleated paper like an oil filter.
The Mann and Mahle air filters are vastly superior in that the rubber sealing edges around the perimeter of the filter just fits better and the pleats are a lot taller than the other brands.
Your Passat has the same design idea that the stock Ford air box has, with tabs at the rear of the box, but they are very robust. They will never break like the Ford tabs were famous for. Just make sure that they all hook when installing the cover back down. And as usual, avoid K&N.
.
When changing the fuel filter and then restarting the engine, there will be a LOT of air that the injector pump has to injest before the fuel arrives. The engine will stall out. Most of the time it will restart after some difficulty. Some of them won't start unless you put a vacuum to it to get some fuel to the pump.
I got around that with my Jetta by installing a lift pump to the fuel filter feed line.

That's an easy one, your dog is telling you he wants his back scratched.
