steering 1947 1/2 ton
Thanks in advance.
BTW, what ever happened to the 42-47 MSN group website?
I haven't rebuilt the box on mine, but know there are a few places that can do it. Hopefully somebody here might be able to chime in and help. As for the MSN groups site, MSN stopped offering the service, probably in a way to save money. I was the creator and manager of the MSN group. MSN just decided to shut it down, never offering us much of an alternative, such as a pay site, etc.
Thanks for answering and also for creating the MSN groups site...it was one of my favorite places.
I would love to do the rebuild on the steering gearbox locally but will welcome any suggestions on reputable rebuilders...
thanks again

I rebuilt the steering box on my 47 and thats probably what you will have to do.
There is a short cut to replacing the Sector Shaft in its entitiry, and that is just replace the roller if it is worn, you can buy them at Mac's comes with the pin. Also you can do this if the Sector Shaft itself is not worn.
You will probably need the Worm for sure, and all new Bearings and Races plus Shims.
The Bearings you can get at any of your local Bearing shop as they cross reference and maybe a better place to get them. As they were most likely made in North America, if you get the drift.
Since mine was done its like having almost power steering, it steers that good, of course I am running the Bias Tires on mine for now.
Just a note on the Bias if you plan on buying some, here goes.
Stay the hell away from the "78" Series Tires they are sucicide, run the numbered Series tires like 6.50-16 or 6.00-16, and if you do go radials which I may do stay with a smaller tire on the front, easier on the steering box.
Anyway hope this helps you a little, good luck.
