hey all,
I've got a 63 f100 w/ 292. I'll start here. A couple months ago the truck would only run for about 10 15 min. so i assumed the coil was goin bad. decided to replace with pertronix set up. the ignitor II and the flamethrower II. i think it was successfully installed yesterday when it started and ran. today planed on a test drive so i started it up let it warm for a min than pushed the choke in and it died now it will only idle with the choke slightly on. also noticed some oil smoke coming from the dipstick tube and breather witch i think it a PCV issue. The carb was rebuilt last summer.
Any thoughts on what my next move is?
Well if it only idles with the choke slightly engaged then what is the idle speed when the choke isn't engaged since all the choke does is increase the idle speed. Might the idle speed need adjustment?
I don't have a tach so i don't know what speed it is running. Since it ran on the points set up i assumed that it would not change. this is my 1st truck i have little automotive experience. did not know that was all the choke did.
will figure out how to adjust idle speed and see if that works.
So just gave myself quick lesson from shop manual. got it to idle with 1/2 a turn. than gave it a couple fast throttle pushes and it sounded like it back fired both times than the rpms shot up and stayed there. it took 2 full turns of idle speed screw to bring it back down to "normal".
checked PCV valve. was not clogged but smelled like gas. ??
I don't think it is the Pertronix. I have installed 5 five of them: two Ignitor I, two Ignitor II and one Ignitor III without a problem. Drop straight in and hooked up 12 volts for three of them. Now before you say I don't have a 12V source it apparently is not a big deal as I ran a II for 2 years without 12V.
What you describe sounds more like a carb adjustment issue than anything else. You could adjust the idle and then blip the throttle and possibly engage the fast idle cam which would boost the idle speed a lot. Which carb do you have?

I ran a 16 gauge wire from the coil wire on the ignition bypassing the resistance wire to the coils + post for a 12V source.
It seems to run a lot smoother and quieter with the Ignitor II parts. so i agree the issue isn't the pertronix.
I believe the carb is the original Motorcraft 2100. what is the fast idle cam and can it or does it need adjusting? or is something else goin on?
ok the fast idle cam is part of the choke but i didn't find any ref. to it in the 61 shop man..
