239 Flat head 8 - '53 F-100. The manual says 5 qts of oil - 6 with filter change. I sucked all the oil out of the canister. But 6 qts puts the oil level about an inch over the full mark on the dip stick.
The dip stick is about 17 1/4" (excluding handle). The tube about 10".
Should I keep puttin in 6 qts or obey the dipstick?
Is this the first time you have changed the oil? If the manual gave no special instructions I would have put in five quarts, run the engine until warm, shut off and allow the oil to run back into the pan before checking the oil level. Then fill to bring it up to the required level. Are you counting the oil in the cannister? chuck
I've changed the oil a few times. Each time I cleaned the excess oil out of the cannister. On line I had seen 5 qts. but no mention of when you change the filter. I did run the engine about fifteen minutes and let it settle before checking the oil.
I gave the measurements of the dipstick 'cause a friend asked if it was the original. More specifically, they asked if it looks old....it does but with a 55 year old truck...who knows.
Do you have a LMC catalog? Shows a 49-53 then a 54-56. The 49-53 is the longer one. Someone will be here shortly to clear up the length. I was always taught to never over fill the oil full line on a standard built engine dipstick. A speciality pan etc takes a different amount of oil. chuck
Not critical at this juncture. I've got to finish replacing the clutch. But it is supposed to rain all weekend and next weekend got to go out of town....errrrrr.
