I hear the "clunk" and the light on the dashboard is lit but I question whether I am in 4 wheel drive.
Lately we have had two heavy snows here in Virginia. On plowed roads or in a few inches of snow the truck handles fine in 4x4 but when I stop and try to start again in 6+ inches of snow/slush or when moving if the snow is high enough that the wheels are plowing then the rear wheels will spin and I have to rock the truck or back up and try again. The front wheels never spin. It is just like driving a rear wheel vehicle. I have heard that snow can pack between the rear wheels and lift them off the ground. I can't tell if this is happening.
The tires are Khumo Ventures and have good tread. Is this just a dually issue? I don't believe so because I have spoken with someone with the identical truck and he plowed with it.
It's frustrating struggling to get out the neighborhood or getting stuck 20' out/from the driveway and embarrassing watching the SUVs zip by.
This morning I made it 42 miles home only to spin rear tires 30 feet from my driveway. The street has a slight uphill grade was unplowed. I had to turn around and park on the side of road.

It sounds like someone has buried "kryptonite" under your driveway... Just kidding!
Sounds like the transfer case is engaging but the hubs are not locking in. If you have the ESOF system then the hubs will say locked and auto. Turn the hub to locked and try it and if it works then you have a problem in the auto system. Do a search on here, plenty of questions answered about 4x4 engaging problems. Hope this helps.
Has anybody actually stood outside to see if front are turning? You said they never spin but is that confirmed> I have a floor shifter so sorry I cant help you but if you. search this forum and type in ESOF and there is alot of info, good luck.
With the truck in "4x4" (light lit) I turned the front left axle by hand. So I know that side was not engaged. Couldn't get to the other side as snow was up to the door.
Just manually lock the hubs until you can get to them. It won't hurt anything to have the hubs manually engaged until you can troubleshoot the issue. Just flip the switch and select 4H when you need it.
The plan is to do just that redford. Crud was causing the right hub to bind. Both were cleaned. I will hunt about for the reason the hubs are not engaging later. No plan to spend $98/hr in shop troubleshooting + cost to repair.
For now I have to deal with the 3 to 24" of snow heading this way tomorrow and Saturday.
