could some knowledgeable person out there please let me know if the perches i need are available from another truck? there was originally a 300 in this 81 with an auto tranny. looking at the pan layouts i printed off from mac's antique auto parts, the tanny that's on the 300 should be a c6, and the tranny that's on the 360 also has the same shaped pan and in many ways looks real darn close to the one on the 300, but for one thing the original has a long housing extention to accomodate a one piece driveshaft and the one on the 360 does not. any info will be greatly appreciated. thanx.
first of all, thank you john for the prompt response to my questions. this is the first time i've posted anything on this board, or any other for that matter.the cause for my concern over the perches is that while some guys tell me to just find a 2wd that had a 360 in it and use those, i've had a guy in one of the local(whithin 50 mi.)bone yards tell me that ford changed the chasis on the later trucks that where not equipped with 360's. i guess that's why i'm releived to find a source of information that i don't have to make a 100 mile trip for.any further hints on this subject would be greatly appreciated. thanks.rick in mn.
rick,i have a friend who just did his third fe transplant in 80 and up.truck.he has a 84' with a 390 now i'll ask him what he used he's good man.first class.oleblue.you might move over to the 80-up forum. right jowilker?
The C6 that bolts to a 300-6 uses a different bellhousing pattern than the 360. The 300 pattern is shared by the 255,302,351W,351C (not the 351M). The 360 is from the FE motor Family 352,360,390 (truck applications there are other FE's as well). I am considering swapping my 390 in a 69 into my 76 but I will have to swap out the smallblock C6 I was using with the 302 I had in it, for an FE C6. I have priced them out in the wrecking yards and I can get one for $150. For $500 more, I can have a tranny shop rebuild it. I have seen some posts from those that did there own rebuild for around $150. Currently my 390 is spinning a 4sp and I kinda dig the shifting. The 76 once was a manual but I can't get real excited about swapping all the stuff back to being a manual again. The smallblock C6 I have has a long tailshaft but I had the old driveline shortened and it still 2-piece. The front part is pretty short however. My 76 originally had a 300 in it and the perches looked identical to the FE perches on my 390.
yo blue. just wondering if you've checked with your man that runs fe's in his '80's trucks. i'm in no big hurry, the temps up here have been below zero and i don't have heated facilities. that swap info would be greatly appreciated though. thanx, rick.
hey rick ,i checked w\ my bud,but it might not be as much helped as i hoped for ya.his first FE transplant in a 83' was total experimentation.he used mounts and perches from a 64' galaxie.but had to modify them.he didn't inquire to anybody .he just went to work on em.and it worked.they hold in a ungodly 390 w\ edel. heads,blue-thunder intake,P-I shortblock.it's a toy.he has done all his FE\ 80' -up swaps this way.i tried! oleblue=
thanks blue, that does help. i'm no stanger to fabrication. it's supposed to be above zero by the end of the week, so maybe i'll get my semi-hibernating backside out to find the closest match i can.if you come across any other pertinent info, please send it my way. thanks again.
rick.
Rick, you are warming up and its going to get down to about 20 in NC Christmas mornng. That aint nice, sending that stuff to the south.
Do you have the engine pulled yet? I had more than one chassis once sitting at my warehouse, and neasured them all. Seems like 15in. at the bottom of the slot kept showing up. I had a 65 chassis that I pulled a I6 fron that had the same perches that one of the same vintage with a FE had. The saddle where the engine rests will be the same regardless of the year model. The left perch is different on a 66 W 352, than a 76 w 360. The perch body leans forward to let a power steering gear fit, but the saddle remains the same.
You are going to have to change the tranny, So new holes in the chassis may have to be made for the new tranny crossmember.
Like I said in my first post, I think it will work, make it not work first, OK

yeah john , sorry about that cold, but you know up here, this time of year, 20 above is a golderned heatwave.
anyway, i have pulled the 300 and tranny that it bolted to. i have had the 360 and it's c6 sitting in the cavity, and looks like i'm going to have to take my perches around to some bone yards. the 360's oil filter was hitting the power steering box and i still had a good 6-8" to go before the mounts would hit the perches.
stay warm, rick.
