I have a 79 Ford f-150 custom 4x4 and I am led to believe that I have a fuel problem. When running down the road my truck will all of the sudden develop the hiccups, (it seems like it is getting air and then fuel and vice versa through my line, but I checked my line that ran from both front and rear tanks at the carbuerator and it my pump seems to be producing a steady flow of gas. Another thing when both tanks read below half that is when it starts, I tried switching tanks, replacing the fuel pump, even went so far as taking off the waterpump to see if the circular cylinder (eccentric) had been damaged, which it had not been. Does anybody know what it could be? I was wondering if I should just get a kit for my carb and rebuild it, or maybe the floats are sticking, If anybody can help me it would be much appreciated!!!
Your problem may well be the carburetor, but I have seen many ignition problems mask themselves as a fuel condition. What changed when this condition developed? Had you just performed a tune-up or anything significant that you can recall. If you have never had the carb off it may be worth taking it apart to see if there is any crud in there. I am assuming that you have at least one fuel filter in your system if not two. Small stuff does get by and build up over 20 years.
Just one other thing to check for-make sure all fuel lines are well away from any heat sources-this will induce vapor lock if they run to close to anything such as exhaust, radiator hoses or the heads themselves. Chuck P.
