ok my god mother has a '03 lairat 4x4 f-150 4.6. recently shes been saying it doesnt get around vey well. she said its in 4x4 but shes still all over the road. well today when she couldnt make it up her driveway and i was there i saw exactly why...her 4x4 isnt working lol
so i hopped in and took a look. the 4x4 lights are working. the t-case is shifting into 4low..but still only the rear tires spinning.
now when my grandpa had a 4x4 issue with his '03 it was the "shift fork" and that was at 15k miles.
since the t-case is working what can i do to try and narrow it down before she takes it to a shop?
These trucks use a vaccum system on the front differential to engage and disengage the (I think) passengers side axle shaft from the splines in the differential. There is a solenoid on one of the fenders that controls vaccum to it I think.
Sorry if I'm a little short, but I haven't kept up with it much since I sold my truck over a year ago...
There's also the vacuum actuator on the front axle (under the plastic cover). Make sure it's not "gunked up". Check for vacuum starting there and work bqack to te cab.
ok, i thought there was a vacuum system also. she hit a snowbank about a week ago and set the air bags off. that could have caused an issue with the lines.
I'll put money on the actuator. mine was cracked causing a huge vacuum leak. it would not make the front tires engage. I replaced it and everything is fine. I have the PDF schematic for this if you would like to have it. email me at my user name @yahoo.com and I will email it to you.
