Bought a 2001 F150 4.2L two days ago. Yesterday, I put the key in the ignition and turn it, and CLICK. Try again, CLICK. Lights are on, battery looks good, the seller just put a new battery in it. I try once more and she fires up and runs great all day. I start it up and shut it down quite a few times all day and forget about the issue. Today I get up nice and early to go into work, -22 celcius last night and Im up at 5. CLICK.....CLICK.......CLICK. Nothing, had to leave it and take the car into work. Any ideas? Solenoid, Starter, Fuses, Oxygen sensors messing things up? I dont know anything about this truck but have been researching as much as I can on this problem.
And can someone send me a diagram of this trucks engine and what is what? Im really green under the hood.
Other problems.
Check engine light is on, I suspect because of what seems like a part in the exhaust system has collapsed in itself. Sounds like a really loud rattling noise. The mechanic that certified it said something about a "baffle?"
It has been cold here at nights, -22 celcius was the coldest.
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
I just read another post with the same issue your having and it turned out to be the battery cable connection at the starter, seems to be common. as far as the exhaust and engine light, that sounds like the cat converter.
Corrosion around the batt posts is something to look at also.Just because you have lights etc, doesent mean that it will start. The starting system requires much more current than the lights. Corrosion isnt necessairily green, pull the cable ends, and look for a black coating around the batt terminals, and inside the connectors.if its there, scrape all metallic surfaces until theyre shiny, and use a wire brush if required.
well the weather warmed up a bit the last two days and it has started without a problem. I cleaned the battery posts so we will see what happens tomorrow morning, it is supposed to be really cold tonight. -20 celcius
