Hey guys, I need some advise on the instrument panel in the 46 my dad is building. I'm trying to find a company that rebuilds the instrument panel in these trucks. the truck is 12 volt now and I want the guages to be 12 volt to. But I want the guages to look original. I've seen somewhere in a book or something about a company that does this. I want everthing refaced and looking new. He has the complete guage panel so I can send it off to be redone. If you all know or can give me some help on this would be great. And if some of you all have had this done I would like to see some pics of it to. I know it's not cheap but this will be a gift from me to him so I'm prepared to pay for it. Thanks for amy help at all.
Check out United Speedometer in Riverside, Ca. They can replace the gauges with new innards and still retain the orignal face and graphics of the '46. They have been around for years and I have seen them written up a few times in some of the street rod magazines. The other options is to use a resistor with the original gauges, Speedway makes one, call Runtz, that works well. I have them on the guages on my '46.
Gary, Thanks for getting back with me on this. I figured you would be one of the guys that got back to me b/c of all the advice you have gave and done on the 42-47 trucks. One thing I need to know now is, is this. We are putting a new tailgate on his truck and he did put new side pockets on the back of his bed. So when you close the tailgate it will not shut all the way b/c the latches hit the bed. The 2 latches that are on the top of the tailgate hit. He did get the right tailgate also. What I need to know does the bed have a slot or a cut out place in it so the tailgate will shut flush with the top of the bed. Thats the only thing keeping it from closing all the way. Thanks for any help on this. Scott
Here is the web address of a guy in CA. who does exactly what your looking for.
This guy is a master, and I have used his services many times. I have recomended him to many Restoration Shops as they had the same question as you have.
So for what its worth to you here is another one to consider, along with the one Gary gave you.
It looks the very same as the 1/2 Ton, with the exception that it has grduations at the start on the speedometer face with the speeds at which to shift gears.
I don't know if you've acted on this yet, but Williamsons (they have a website) has a pretty good rep on the HAMB for quality, customer service and turn around time. I think they are in So. Cal....no personal experience, just passing info.
