Can a leaking front oil seal cause the 7.3 engine oil pump to occasionally not be able to keep up with the HPOP on start up?
Have one that occasionally starts and then dies after sitting for a few hours, upon checking HPOP resevoir it is found to be empty. Refill it and it starts and goes after some roughness. The resevoir does not drain out while sitting and this problem seems more likely to occur after a few hour shutdown than it is from sitting over a weekend.
I think there is a check valve that keeps the HPOP from draining. You may want to check that though I don't know where it is located.
Someone with more knowledge then I will comment soon I'm sure.

The HPOP resevoir is not draining. This seems to be a case of the lubricating oil pump not building pressure fast enough after starting resulting in the HPOP pumping the oil faster than its resevoir is getting refilled. I have the engine oil pump off now and it appears to be in good shape but the front seal was leaking a good bit as the damper is covered with oil on the backside. Just wondering if the seal leaking could also admit air and allow the oil in the lube pump to drain back into the pan after engine shutdown?
