This has happened on my '04 a few times. If the dash says the gate is ajar it does not think it is closed and will not operate with the remote or switch. Open and gate a little way by hand and then slam it closed. You should then be able to operate normally. At least that has worked for mine.

Your problem is that you need to spray the latches with WD40 to clean them up. I beleive the OP is talking about the electric open and close feature on Navi tailgates.

I am also talking about the electric tailgate. I have a 2004 Navi with the electric lift. Sometimes it does not close all the way and the system seems to get hung up. To clear it, I open it part way by hand and then slam it tight. Then the switch and remote will start working again.
