351 water pump replacement
Hey guys, figured I would start a thread to guide some attention this way.
I had some bolts break off the wp and I was able to pry the pump itself off. The 2 bolts are still there minus the heads so its just some studs now.
Here is what I am working with,
any ideas?

They are probably more stuck in the timing cover than the threads in the block. you could try heating the timing cover where the bolts go through, tap the bolt in all directions with a hammer to try to break up the corrosion between the bolt and cover and of course soak it down with PB Blaster. Also tap on the cover where the bolt goes through to try to break things free. I'd plan on replacing the timing cover gasket, it will most likely leak coolant

You could also try working the studs back and forth. Don't just try to turn them counter-clockwise.

it will be nearly impossible to drill the bolts out because as soon as the bit walks off center it will get into the softer timing cover and get off the bolt. Its hard enough to drill 1/2" or so without this happening, let alone drilling that far.I'd try more heat and a bigger hammer. You may have to cut the timing cover along the length of the bolts and replace it.

To drill them you have to get the timing cover off . These bolts ussually seze to the timing cover . You may have to take all the bolts off the cover & knock it off . So the timing cover may need to be replaced .. If you remove the cover look at the chain & gears . If they are worn or have alot of miles on them i would replace them . Good luck this is never an easy job . Lew

You could drill into the ends a lil bit and try an oversized EZout hooked up to a breaker bar. Just make sure you don't put any sideways stress on the EZ-out bit, they tend to be brittle. I've broke one off and had to start from square on again on a yoke for the U-joint hold-down bolts.

you could also use a cutoff wheel and cut through the timing cover and bolt about 1/2" from the block. You should then be able to get the cover off and have enough bolt sticking out of the block to remove them.

..I agree . After the cover is off i think the bolts will come out . This is a comen problem on the 302 & i guess the 351 ...Lew
