I need to build a simple system to get the top off the Bronco in my garage. My wife can't lift half of it, and she gets pissed when I try to do all the work by myself.
I'm thinking about a simple system of 4 hefty hooks / eye bolts into the ceiling in the garage. If I can get them solidly into the ceiling (beams, not just drywall) and use some decent quality tie-down straps, will that be good to hold the weight?
Instead of threading into a rafter, get up in the crawl space and lay 4x4's across the rafters. Then get 1" threaded rod, drill through the 4x4s and run the rod through the drywall. Attach a peice of plywood to the underside, and glue a rubber mat to it. Then you've got the support you need. Load test it. Heck get eye-bolts and a piece of 1/2" plywood. as well. Use the hooks to raise it, slide the plywood under it, the let it down and connect the hooks to the eye-bolts. Sheesh, I remember when mine was low enough to fit in the garage....
